I work from home, I run a small web-hosting service from my home, and I have a lot of computer toys I play with at home. All of this lends to the very large and complicated setup I work from, my workspace.

I have three PC desktops, one PC laptop, one PC web-pad, two sparc 2's, one sparc 5, a 25 port managed ethernet switch, two wireless ethernet access points, a portmaster PM-25, a cisco 2511 with a Tellus TSU for my T-1, an HP PSC 750 printer/scanner, a WTI smart power strip, an Exide/AT&T 2kva UPS, Benwin speakers, logitech keyboard with special keys mapped to personalized functions, wireless optical logitech mouse, and a crappy 19" monitor. And it's always changing.

Changed again! I bought a very nice 6 foot tall computer cabinet from a guy on eBay, and put all my computers but my laptop in it. It's very nice, with the frosted glass front, and a big honkin' exaust fan on the top. All my computers just barely fit in it, (with the UPS) but it's so nice to have everything in there. After I fitted an insulated air duct to the fan, my living room is 1/4 as noisy as it was before. Now, all I have to do is figure out how to get that duct outside, and it'll lower my air conditioning costs significantly!

I had this great idea for getting the hot air from the computer cabinet duct outside. I would make a piece of metal ductwork, that looked like a very long, skinny vent, that I would place vertically in the window. If it was skinny enough, it would be hardly noticable, and wouldn't attract the attention of the apartment complex management office. So I made one, basically out of a four inch metal half-pipe, and a real rectangular vent, attached. This I spray-painted black on the outside, and white on the inside, which would make it very hard to see. (The black part would be visable from outside the apartment. When I brought the vent in, after the paint had dried, I realized I had attached the vent to the tube upside down, and that it was pointing in the wrong direction. If I had the vent on the top, it wouldn't fit in the window. Arrrgh! It even looks nice, and does a good job! Arrgh. Oh well, I fitted the exaust duct to the vent, and put it temporarily in the window till I can re-make the vent. It works pretty will, seals reasonably well, and hasn't fallen out of the window! It's too early to tell if it makes a dent in my A/C usage, but I'll be able to tell when next month's electric bill comes in.

Yeay! I finished the replacement window vent, hung the duct from the celing, attached the duct to the vent, made little brackets to keep the vent in the window, and hung my Dad's painting on the cabinet!
Best of all, I think, is that it looks like my A/C has been on about 1/4 as much today as it was yesterday! That should save me about $200 a month on electricity!

It's been a long time since I've updated this page! A lot has changed! I bought a house, and now have a whole room for my office. The computer cabinet is vented to the attic, and I have a nice window to look out of again!
See, when I worked for Verio, I had a desk right in front of a 10x10 foot window on the 15th floor. I've been trying to get a good view back ever since. I really like looking out onto my yard while I'm working. It's quite relaxing.

Erik (2002-07-18): Yep. About 75% noise reduction, and 50% A/C reduction. (My A/C controller shows usage. Yesterday it was on for 3 hours, day before that: 6)
