| Over the last couple of Saturdays, Chris bell and I have been hiking in Whiting Ranch, and Black Star Canyon.
Last weekend was Black Star. We'd been there before, but stayed down in the riverbed, looking for the ellusive waterfall. This time, we were up on the ridgeline, and though we got rained on, it was very pleasant, pretty, and very good excersize!
This weekend we took a big loop through Whiting Ranch, which was probably longer, but a less harsh hike. And we saw deer!

Mom (2006-03-02): The florals are really beautiful. You've caught the light and translucency of the petals, shadows of veins and overlapping petals and leaves and the coarse and soft textures. They're delightful to study.
What lense was it that you used for these?
Erik (2006-03-02): Which florals? You mean the ones from the Fullerton Arboretum? I used a rented micro lens, the Nikkor 60mm f2.8

Erik (2006-03-05): People are hard, but are on my list of subjects to get better at.
Kindigulous (2006-03-18): Erik/Chris: Do you happen to know where Black Star Canyon Indian Village Site is located? My book says: Black Star Canyon on Black Star Canyon Rd, 6.0 mi N of Silverado Canyon Rd, 9 mi N of Silverado. However, at the time I was landmark hunting, the road was locked by a gate and a ranger said he could not provide that location to me. Have you guys ever been to this site?
Erik (2006-03-20): Kindigulous, Yes, Chris and I have hiked almost to that spot, but had to turn around due to rain and exhaustion. On a cool, dry day, it'd be a good, heavy hike.
John (2006-04-24): The Indian villiage is located on a small knoll that is just past the last of the switchbacks as you climb toward Hidden Ranch (about 1900 - 2000 foot contour). There should be a wealth of grinder holes, rich and greasy soil, and maybe other artifacts. For more info, you should rent the book "Shadows of Old Saddleback" from the O.C. Public Library...it contains historical info on the whole canyon, and the entire Santa Ana range.
