| Well, I'm a goddamn Java programmer again.
Since I need to integrate the [k3e] system with an external medical consultation engine, which is written in Java, I've been working to add XML/HTTP access to the thing by writing a webserver around it. Thankfully, Fred over at pont.net had a good example of a HTTP 1.0 Java webserver that I could easily modify.
I altered it to talk HTTP 1.1, and added GET string parsing, so that I could make my functions could accept arguments, and it works just fine. Thanks Fred!
I just have to ask one question. Why the FUCK doesn't the java.lang.String class implement a join constructor, or a split method?! How the hell can you conceive of a String object without implementing split and join? Why make people loop through this stuff, when it could very easily be done in one line of code?

Erik (2003-06-17): I don't think I actually hate zope. It's got it's niche. There was actually a test version of erikburrows.com in Zope. I still have it installed... Somewhere. Python, on the other hand, is evil. You know what just occured to me? Python has some of the same evil characteristics of Java. Both Java and Python people seem to believe everything should use their language, and only their language. Personally, I like using the right tool for the job. The [k3e] system uses five different languages now.
Steve Kehlet (2003-06-17): heheh... I think I actually hate Zope. Haven't touched it once since I left CodeIt. The problem with Zope is you either do everything exactly the Zope way, or you suffer great pain. And its threading model was completely insane: each thread has its own copy of an object, and then you have to handle conflicts at commit time with special code. Supposedly this is to make life easier for naive programmers who can't handle locking primitives and thread synchronization, geez. Am I ranting? Someone stop me. On the other hand, I really do like Python, but the biggest problem is no one knows it, so peer pressure tends to discourage me using it on the job ("what the heck is Python??"), especially (and understandably) in places where code may need to be maintained by other people.
Connelly Barnes (2007-04-03): I like Python because it lets me use functions (in the higher order sense) and it otherwise doesn't violate Occam's razor too egregiously by grafting on various ideas about how functions "should work." So I can code my way around any OOP nonsense that the language throws at me, and the builtin syntax for solving many common problems is reasonably concise. I dislike C++ but will use it when appropriate because it's fast despite being a horrid hack. I dislike ML because it seems syntactically impossible, but very much like that it's fast and reasonably concise, although I would prefer that the type system were optional. I like Matlab when I don't have to do anything involving data structures. I like specialized languages like PHP when I'm doing what the language is designed for. I expect that I would like Lisp because I'm constantly getting annoyed at various languages' shortcomings.
Connelly Barnes (2007-04-03): And Java is torture, it lacks just about every syntactic abbreviation and abstraction held by all of the above languages. Zope is a framework, what more needs to be said. Even Python is slow as hell and has an incredibly arrogant fanbase which doesn't seem to understand the distinction between normative and positive values. I'm not sure you can win! There are no good languages!
