| Being an open-source advocate, and a friend to people who are learning PHP, it makes sense for me to make my web site open-source. So, with no warrantee expressed or implied, and with no license whatsoever, the full, living source code to my web site is available here. The above is a read-only view into the publicly accessable CVS server I run to keep the source for this web site. The CVS server is also accessable by anonymous pserver. To get it, type: cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@erikburrows.com:/admin/cvsroot login cvs checkout everything_blog I welcome usage and improvments to the code, however, the anonymous pserver is read-only, so if you have an enhancement or fix for me, please email me. Update: 2003/12/04: Session/transaction framework made a seperate module I seperated out the framework I use to manage the session/transaction relationship for requests used on this site into a seperate module from the everything_blog module. I've used this framework for several sites, and found it to be terribly useful. Included is a mechanism to connect to a PostgreSQL database, start a transaction, initialize a session object, SQL helper libraries, and disconnect/cleanup functions. The everything_blog module now depends on the php_session_transaction module, which can be checked out by doing: cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@erikburrows.com:/admin/cvsroot login cvs checkout php_session_transaction The viewcvs link to the php_session_transaction module is here Update: 2004/02/18: Since steve distracted me from my [AprsWorld] work with thoughts of encryption, I dusted off another old project waiting around: Now, all user passwords in the erikburrows.com database are md5 hashed, rather than stored in the clear. This adds a bit of security, in that if someone cracked into my server, they would not be able to retrieve user passwords from the database. It also means that I cannot see your password. For a detailed discussion of md5, hashes, and other forms of one-way encryption, google 'cryptography'. Update: 2004/03/24: I just made a small change to optimize database access for lookup of keywords. On my browser, this resulted in about a 50% speed increase for the index page load time. Hopefully this will make the site less painful to read! Update: 2004/07/16: Since some articles here have gotten to be terribly popular, I've added compression of older comments. Now, only the most recent 10 comments to a node will be displayed, with a message and link allowing prople to un-compress the older comments. I might play with the number of comments to show, and this is just the next in a long line of evolutionary steps toward the best format, but I like it so far. Update: 2004/08/28: I am planning on cleaning up the source code for erikburrows.com and the ImageServer project, by using a better template system, and PHP5 objects. To that end I have just upgraded to Apache 2.0, with PHP 5. Also, I upgraded PostgreSQL to 8.0, just for fun. Look for lots of commits on both projects, as I clean things up and learn the ins and outs of PHP5. try/catch! Yeay! | ||

Comments: Steve Kehlet (2003-01-21): One thing you might do is add .phps symlinks around instead of .txt... if you've set up your apache server with something like: AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps then php will syntax highlight your php source for you. Erik (2003-01-21): You and your wacky source code highlighting... Silly boy. Highlighting simply distracts your brain. You should be looking at source code, and seeing the logic! The boxes and arrows that the original programmer drew on a whiteboard sometime in the past. Beautiful geometric shapes of logic! Ok, fine. I changed them all to .phps. Hope that helps. :-) Erik (2003-01-21): Also fixed the add comment code, it should have been redirecting to the node you were looking at! Steve Kehlet (2003-01-21): I am getting soft in my old age. For God's sake, I use KDE at work and a Mac at home these days :-). So how about making a tarball of your source? And is this everything, or are you holding back on some stuff... Erik (2003-01-21): This is all of it, except for the protected file which defines db_user, db_database and db_password. I'm getting a bit lazy in my coding too, I use tabs now instead of double or quad spaces... I guess I can't focus my aging eyeballs that well. Steve Kehlet (2003-11-30): You should add some checks to the comment postings to verify they're not empty, etc. I've seen a number of empty ones fly by lately. Erik (2003-11-30): Yep. Done. Also, as per your suggestion a while ago, I'm somewhat packaging up the code, making the code generic, and putting the 'Erikburrows.com'ness into the configuration file. I might even seperate out the look-and-feel into a seperate module. Erik (2003-12-03): Ok, the code has been cleaned up a lot. I've removed lots of specific references to erikburrows.com, and cleaned up the file layout. Also, all of the header/footer/template files are now included using a new mechanism which smartlink parses, and PHP evaluages the file. Erik (2003-12-03): And, I just added automatic reference lookup. Now, nodes list which nodes link to them as a 'see also' list. Erik (2005-01-31): Since a couple of articles on this site (Tonsillectomy, Chronic Hiccups) have gotten so popular, the index page has been pretty boring. My new and updated articles don't stay on top for very long, which doesn't really work. I've changed the site logic so that only new and updated articles get pushed to the top of the index page. permalink |
