| Last night Vanessa and I took off into Frazier Park, for some more night-time photography. It was our second time going into Frazier, as it is a good location, with altitude, cool air and dark skies, and is only about 3 hours from home.
Vanessa drove the whole way there, including about 5 miles of mountainside dirt road, in complete darkness. She did great!
I found a nice looking park road, 9N19, that followed along a ridge line as our destination, since the top of the ridge would have good visibility of the sky, good altitude, and not have many other people around. This worked out quite well, as we found a nice flat clearing, and saw only one other vehicle all night.
To start, I took some pictures of Jupiter. This one is with my camera at "prime focus" with no eyepiece magnification. Four of Jupiter's moons are visible, but Jupiter itself is so bright, it's atmospheric bands aren't really visible. From left to right, the visible moons are probably: Europa, Callisto, Io and Ganymede:
This is a similarly set-up picture of Jupiter and it's moons, but a shorter exposure, so the moons are darker, but Jupiter's distinctive coloring starts to come out:
This last picture of Jupiter is my best effort at extreme close-up. This is the highest magnification my current equipment can do, using my 4.5 inch reflector telescope and 9mm eyepiece:
Here is my largest picture of the moon. It is not very good quality, mostly because it was low on the horizon, and my tracking wasn't very good for it, but still, a big-ass picture of the moon. Unlike all the other pictures here which were processed with LightZone, this one was processed with the Gimp and Ufraw, which allowed me to correct for some of the telescope's extreme chromatic abberation:
Next are a couple of star-field pictures, with the Milky Way's disk behind the local pine trees:
And last is a different type of picture than I had taken before, a long exposure star-field, but with my 500mm f8 mirror-reflex lens, rather than my wide-angle 18-70. This is of the Pleiades Star Cluster:
One tool for Astrophotography that has made my life much easier and more interesting is a program called Stellarium. Stellarium allows you to navigate around the night sky, from any perspective, from any time and place. It gives you the names of the objects, allows you to search, see constellations, everything. For educating yourself about the night sky, I know of no better tool. It works for Linux, Mac, and Windows. |

Erik (2009-09-27): Actually, when we got home at 4:00 this morning, I looked up and was surprised to see that I could see six of the Pleiades. Not bad!
