| Can someone please tell me why not a single business establishment I have been in recently has been able to properly execute a reservation?
Today I went to see a doctor. I called a WEEK before, and made an apointment (reservation of the doctor's time) for 10:15. To me, this means that from 10:15 for a while, some average time of visits, the doctor is free to work on me. Doesn't this make sense? Isn't that why we make an apointment? But no. That is not how it worked out. I waited (on my employer's dime) in the waiting room, which was filled with people, for over an hour. Then, I was moved into a room, not a private room mind you, but a type of people-corral. A big comunal casting room. There I waited for another half hour, only to be met by a P.A. A Physician's Assistant. Named Mr. Sunshine. I kid you not. Did I wait a week, an hour and a half so that some half-wit can try to deduce the problem with my thumb, that my fully-accredited doctor could not? No. I did not. So I complained. Half an hour later, the freakin' secretary came in to argue with me about wether or not I made a reservation for a specialist. Half an hour after that, some doctor OTHER than the one I made an APPOINEMENT to see came, and told me he couldn't see anything from the X-ray, and GUESSED what the problem was.
Every time I have been to the Cheesecake Factory restaraunt, they give me a beeper, so that I will know when it's my time to be seated. This is a kind of short-term reservation. So when the beeper beeps, I go in, hand the host(es) the beeper, and WAIT another ten minutes till they can seat me.
It seems to me that no one understands how reservations work. Here's how they should work, for your reference. If you see someone who does not understand, show them this simple rule set:
- For each type of reservation you take, keep in mind a running average for the amount of time that kind of reservation takes.
- When taking a reservation, keep in mind that you need to allow the above computed time for the previous reservation to be completed, before the next one can be started.
It's really not hard. It's actually very easy. So easy that a five year old child could do it. To me, this says that the majority of people who have taken reservations for me, ARE MORE STUPID THAN A FIVE YEAR OLD CHILD! |

Steve Kehlet (2002-09-18): You know, I never really got that angry about it but you're right--the Cheesecake Factory always buzzes you several minutes before they're really ready to seat you. What gives? Also they like to buzz people in herds, so you have contention between several buzzees as everyone stands around waiting.
Erik (2002-09-18): I know! What the hell is the deal with that?! These people simply don't have any idea how to properly schedule these things!
