| OpenStreetMap is an excellent project. Some of my contributions to OSM include my mapping efforts in the Mojave. I want to help further, and have chosen to work to import the full list of designated wilderness spaces in the US. The OSM database has some of these areas, but not all, and not all that are there are classified properly. Knowing where these spaces are is very important to me, as they indicate the least disturbed of wilderness areas, and also are usually closed to vehicle traffic, which is good to know for navigation.
So, I have begun a new OSM project named "USWilderness" to import the designated wilderness areas into to the OSM database. The project is described in the Wilderness.net wiki page on wiki.openstreetmap.org.
The designated wilderness areas are specified by law, but maintained by several US government agencies:
The US Forest Service,
US Fish and Wildlife,
National Park Service, and
Bureau of Land Management.
Gathering all the raw data from these agencies is a huge task, but lucky for me, a site based out of the University of Montana has been established for just this purpose: Wilderness.net. The wilderness.net site details each wilderness site with pictures, descriptions and travel instructions. They also maintain a current, complete and high-resolution database of every wilderness area, available for download by anyone.
I'm using the Wilderness.net data, Christopher Schmidt's polyshp2osm.py program, and of course OGR to import the data. The first import, of the "Mojave Wilderness" can be seen at the changeset page, and in the map below. (The wilderness areas are the darker green shapes.)
