| After getting my Nikon D70 camera stolen, I finally went and got the replacement, my brand new Nikon D200 camera:
Here it's shown with the MB-200 vertical grip, which makes it more comfortable to hold in a vertical orientation, holds two batteries, and for me, makes it more comfortable in the horizontal orientation due to having about 1/2 inch more room for my pinky and ring fingers. Also shown is the SB-600 flash, and the "kit" 18-70mm f3.5-4.5 lens.
My D70 was stolen in my camera bag, so almost everything I had was taken. All that was left was my coolwalker image bank, 105mm VR macro lens, and 2x teleconverter.
I loved my old 18-70mm f3.5-4.5 lens, and even after doing a lot of reading on alternatives, such as the Tamron and Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 lenses, I chose to stick with the Nikkor 18-70. It's reasonably fast, light, very sharp and focuses very quickly. The only major flaw is it's vignetting at the wide end, which can be compensated for digitally or by stopping down the aperture a bit. I'm very happy with it.
I also previously had the SB-600, and while I considered upgrading to the SB-800, I don't think I really need the extra power, especially for $200, and the ability to use AA rechargable batteries is very nice.
The camera itself caused me the greatest consternation. I got my D70 a few months before the D200 was annouced, and was happy even after because at the time the D70 was all I needed. Now, I'm still a very beginner-level photographer, but I know I'll be doing it for years and years, so it makes sense to spend a little more to get some extra features, especially ruggedness.
The D200's main competition was the
Fujifilm S5 Pro and
Sigma SD-14.
I still had my 105mm VR macro lens, which I love, so I still wasn't interested in changing families (ie. Canon) and the Fuji S5 pro is based on the same Nikon F6 body that the D200 is based on, so has many of the same features, plus, it's incredible enhanced dynamic range capability. The decision to go with the D200 here was because of availability (the S5 won't be in stores until April), and the simply rave reviews of the D200's handling. The SD-14 has some great technology, but also won't be available for a while, and has even worse handling. I'll be a very happy camper if a Foveon chip ever makes it into a Nikon body.
The D200 is a fantastic camera, and though I've only had it for a few days, I'm extremely happy with it. It's got all the extra buttons and switches that I wished my D70 had (for ease and quickness of changing settings), greater resolution, better auto-focus, a bigger, brighter viewfinder, much bigger LCD, and the weather sealing and magnesium body that should make it live a long time, even on all the bumpy desert roads I plan to take it down.
