Land Anchor -   2015/03/31 Viewed 126 times this month, last update: 2019/01/07
In it's natural environment.
Tacked together before welding and painting.
Above is my design for a land anchor, intended for use in soft sand such as in the Devil's Playground. It's a self-recovery device for off-roading when there are no natural objects to winch against. When pulled, the anchor digs itself into the ground, providing a large amount of resistance. Here it is being tested, note how it disappears completely underground about half way through. This is enough resistance to winch out of soft sand:
The main bar is 1/8 inch thick steel tube, four feet long. The spades and brackets are 1/4 inch steel, and the bolts are 3/4 inch grade-8. Total weight is 40 pounds. It's all designed to have a 2:1 safety factor when pulled with up to 12,000 pounds (my winch rating).
In testing with a single spade in denser sand, the main tube did bend a little, so the next version will incorporate additional reinforcement.
dc0de (2015-03-31): Awesome... that looks cool... commercialize it? (2015-03-31): Thanks! No, too much liability risk. Erik permalink
