The Feb 03 2001 Trip to the Ironage Mine

Saturday, Feb 3 2001, I got a new truck, my Land Rover Discovery II. I've always said that when I finally get a truck, (my last car was a Saturn) I'd take it out to the desert the very next day. So, gawdafull early sunday, I picked up Matt and Chris Bell and took off for the Ironage Mine trail outside of Twentynine Palms. Chris was still laid up with a badly sprained ancle, but he was going a little stir-crazy sitting at home, so he came along, bouncing arround in the back seat.
This trail was more than I asked for when I said to Matt and Chris: "Let's find some dirt". This trail was nasty! Almost got stuck once, traged my back-end a number of times, dislodging my back bumper, and even took a nick of metal out of my tow-hitch on a big rock. But damn we had fun. I learned the awesome power of my new toy, and some of it's limitations, and saw some cool stuff!
Here's the full picture directory.
I said mine! This is one of the mine shafts Matt and I went emploring in. Yes, I know we shouldn't have, but we did. So there! It was cool, but a little spooky too. This is about 100ft into a shaft right into the side of a mountain.
My pretty new truck, outside of the above mine. I didn't know it, but at this point, the worst was over. From here on out it was just rocky trails, and one or two more tail-drags.
Here's Matt standing on the top of a giant abandoned rock loader bin. This thing was about 30 feet on a side, and probably once fed down to a conveyor to load outbound trucks or something. It was HUGE!
I said HUGE!
Looking out onto the mine pit from the loader bin. You could tell from the old-rust color of the mountain rocks, that this place was solid iron.
My truck. Notice the lack of GPS on the dash, that was soon remidied. Run Chris!
