| I love the California Desert. For some reason, it seems in my blood. It feels like home to me.
My family used to take me to the desert quite a bit when I was a kid, but my Dad didn't really like it, so as soon as my brother and I were old enough, we started doing ski trips, instead of desert trips.
That was OK though, because I like Skiing too, and not long after, I was able to start trekking out to the desert myself!
These days, I do as many desert trips as I can get in (which is nowhere near enough) with friends like Matt Bell and Chris Bell. Mostly what we do is head out so somewhere we havn't been before, to see what's there! It's great fun. We get to play with trucks, radios, fire, guns (them, not me!) and exploration!
In the last couple of years, Matt, Chris and I have been all over the Mojave, and some of the Anza Borrego. We still have the southern region of the Borrego, the north-east and nort-west regions of the Mojave, and all of Death Vally to explore before we need to start moving out-of-state. |

seven laracuente (2005-08-21): i hung out in the desert (joshua tree) for the first time ever. i love it. i want more. where are you guys headed to next.
Erik (2005-08-22): Joshua Tree is a beautiful park, and a great place to start exploding the Mojave. I'd suggest going back to Joshua Tree, and really get to know it. Then, start heading north, toward Amboy, Kelso and Baker. Lots of fun trails and neat places to see there!
Rich May (2005-10-19): Oh you guys need to go to the Desert Center area on I-10 then take Rice rd to the sand dunes about 10 miles or so. This whole desert area is called Pattens play ground. I use to work for Kaiser Steel there at Eagle Mt. I have found all kinds of old Army Tank stuff.Land Mines. A under ground tank crew bunker 3 bunks ammo room. Look for a 2''x12''box in the ground. this was there Air vent, but fill in with dirt,all but the one off of rice rd about 5 mile from the sand dunes exit rd. They had stairs going down about 15' away. Any way becareful out there.

John (BFH) (2007-12-02): What sort of radios do you play with? I am now exploring the Rand Mining areas, and can be found on 40, 17, or 6 M.
Erik (2007-12-08): I have a Yaesu FT-817, which will do HF as well as VHF, but I stay on 2m for the most part.
