| Chris Bell and I took off for Death Valley to go exploring Friday. Chris wanted to check out the Saline Valley Road, which streaches all the way from Highway 190 to Death Valley Road, through a great chunk of the park. Saturday we took off from our camp site at Red Rock Mountain, up Trona Road, Highway 178, and to Highway 190. We then truck off north down Saline Valley Road, toward Saline Valley. We traveled along Saline Valley road for 60 miles, up into Jackass Canyon where we hit snow at 6100 feet, down into the valley, past the end of Lippincott Mine Road, around the estuary, up the other side of the valley, past Willow Creek Camp and into Inyo Mountains.
We got within five miles of Death Valley road, before having to turn around due to snow covering the road at 6500 feet. We made it through two big patches of snow, but the four foot deep snow drift all the way across the trail forced us back. Back through the entire 60 miles of Saline Valley, back to Highway 190. We met two very nice couples, and saw some beautiful landscapes.
The wildflowers were in full swing. When we first arrived at Red Rock Mountain, opening the door of the truck, we were amazed at the sweetness of the air. Every surface was covered in wildflowers, and the land was humming with the activity of all the happy critters.

Chris' view of my digging. No, it wasn't all that deep, but it was up-hill, and sloshy, and muddy, and we had no tire chains. If we did have tire chains, we could have gotten much more stuck!

Erik (2005-04-23): Climbing Mt. Whitney is something I'd like to do, maybe I can talk my friends Chris and Matt into it. I doubt it'd be a hard sell.
